When the two products are mixed it produces a biocide. Making water suitable for both human consumption. The products comply with article. 95 of EU Regulation 528/2012 on biocides. Drinking river water, spring water or water from a well can cause serious illnesses such as gastroenteritis and diarrhoea. These illnesses can be very serious if the individual has a weakened immune system, is very young, or elderly.
Many people feel they can judge if water is suitable for consumption, the fact that animals drink the water is no guide at all. Some feel that if water is flowing, for example, if a river appears crystal clear, then it is safe to drink. Water that is flowing can nevertheless be contaminated with viruses' parasites and bacteria. It can also be contaminated with chemicals. Many people have become ill drinking from a natural spring, but the spring water has passed under land where there has been heavy use of pesticides and insecticides.
People who hike are frequently thirsty due to the physical exertion, this where a kit can provide adequate drinking water. Humans can survive for very long periods of time without food, but water is essential for survival.
There is nothing new about chlorine dioxide it goes back to 1814 when it was discovered by by Sir Humphrey Davy. Chlorine dioxide is a synthetic gas, it's colour is difficult to pinpoint, probably best described as a yellowish green colour, which changes at 59 degrees centigrade into a reddish colour, chlorine dioxide should not be confused with chlorine; a big advantage it has is it has high water solubility;, it is up to ten times more soluble in water than chlorine. In 1944 chlorine dioxide was used to solve an issue in a water treatment plant at Niagra Falls.
The next milestone was in 1956 when the Belgium city of Brussels stopped using chlorine in the city's drinking water and switched to chlorine dioxide. In 1967 the US Environmental Protection Agency approved chlorine dioxide as a sanitiser and disinfectant for the use in bottling plants, washing fruit and vegetables and for the treatment of medical waste. By 1970 in the United States hundreds of water systems had converted to to chlorine dioxide. Then in 1983 the US Environmental agency recommended chlorine dioxide to solve the problem with trihalomethanes more commonly known as THMs, THMs are carcinogenic. Chlorine dioxideis because it does not produce THMs.
By the 1990's chlorine dioxide was being used in the UK and many other European countries. The United States government used chlorine dioxide as a decontaminate against the Anthrax attacks. In 2005 New Orleans was hit by hurricane Katrina. Chlorine dioxide was used on the
homes that had been flooded to eradicate mildew and mould. It causes biofilms to disintegrate by penetrating them.
